Come to Mendocino County and leave your commute behind.

Leave Your Commute Behind!

Mendocino County covers more than 3,500 square miles, and much of it is timber and rangeland. It's a place where you can still find affordable housing and a slower pace.

It's also a place where you can get off work at 5:00, and 30 minutes later be dropping your line in the water or climbing a hill on the trail of a big buck. There are nine state parks in the county, numerous county and municipal parks, the Yolla Bolla Wilderness and the Mendocino National Forest, with over 900,000 acres of mountains and canyons with everything from camping, hiking, backpacking, boating, fishing and hunting, to nature study and off-highway vehicle areas.

Thinking of A Lateral Move?
Resident Deputy in Covelo, Round Valley, Mendocino County

Lateral doesn’t have to mean “same old, same old.”  In Mendocino County, it means knowing that you’re making a real difference in the community, while at the same time enjoying the perks of the great outdoors.  In postings like our resident deputy position in Covelo, you’re only 10 minutes from the Mendocino National Forest.  If you head west, you’ll be at the Pacific Coast in a little over an hour.  Both the Coast and the mountains have spectacular camping, hunting and fishing opportunities.

CoveloThe Covelo Deputy II post requires a lateral transfer.  (We also have other Deputy I positions, as well as correctional positions open.)   The Covelo position receives a hiring bonus of $15,000 (3-5-7).  County retirement is 3% @ 55 (1937 Act with PERS reciprocity option).  There is also a 5% bonus and an assigned vehicle for resident status.  The Covelo post also requires that the deputy live within the assigned jurisdictional area.

A resident deputy in Covelo can look forward to the advantages of living in a small community with a diverse population, including a Native American population at the Round Valley Reservation.  Round Valley is one of the most scenic parts of Mendocino County.  Two forks of the Eel River flow through the area, and the Mendocino National Forest, including the Yolla Bolla Wilderness, offers plenty of camping, hunting, and other outdoor activities.

Are you ready for the next step in your career?  The one that will take you out of the proverbial rat race and make you a real member of the community?  Then come to Mendocino County; get rid of your commute, get to know a rural county, and know that you can make a real difference (and snag a 20” brown trout on the weekend).

The County Seat of Ukiah is 130 miles north of San Francisco and 120 miles west of Sacramento, right off U.S. Highway 101.
