Synopsis: On 11/29/08, at approx. 1340 hrs., a cellular 911 telephone call was transferred to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Offices. The caller reported that a subject had fallen off of a cliff at the Mendocino Headlands State Park and into the ocean. Mendocino County Sheriff Deputies arrived within minutes and were told that a 51-year-old male had been climbing down a cliff when he fell into the ocean below, a distance of approximately 20 feet. Deputies initially could see the subject in the waters of Mendocino Bay.

Additional aid was requested from the Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department and the United States Coast Guard (USCG). California State Park Rangers and California Highway Patrol Officers also responded to aid in the rescue.

The subject was lost from sight and the area was searched by a USCG cutter and helicopter, Mendocino Fire Dept. ocean rescue personnel, and Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue personnel. The search was hampered by the high swells. The subject was not located before darkness fell.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit will resume the search on 11/30/08.
