Synopsis: On 03-30-2012 at approximately 0915 hours, Volunteer Fire Chief Michael Suddith notified the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) that a metal container potentially housing dynamite had been turned into him at Redwood Coast Fire [19601 South Highway 1].

The concerned citizen who turned over the container to Chief Suddith had reportedly found the container while working in the area of the Odd Fellows Cemetery located in the 23000 block of South Highway 1.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EOD) was contacted and requested to respond. Meanwhile, MCSO Deputies, along with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol and Redwood Coast Fire, initiated explosive safety protocols pending the HCSO EOD Units arrival.

At approximately 1800 hours, HCSO EOD Specialists arrived on scene and were able to positively identify the contents of the container as DuPont brand dynamite. HCSO EOD Specialists rendered the explosive material safe at the location.

MCSO Deputies were unable to develop any investigative leads as to who placed the explosive material at its discovered location. Anyone with further information is requested to contact Deputy Gander at 707-961-2421. Callers may remain anonymous.
