Synopsis: On 4-19-2012 MCSO personnel were dispatched to approximately 1 mile up Muir Mill Road, Willits, regarding an aggressive subject standing in the Roadway.

At approximately 0910 hrs a MCSO Lieutenant located what appeared to be an abandoned vehicle (pick-up truck) parked on the side of the road, in the approximate area of the reported aggressive subject. As the Lieutenant exited his patrol unit a male subject jumped out of the truck, grabbed a shovel from the bed of the truck, and aggressively charged the Lieutenant. The subject was subsequently handcuffed and detained.

It was later determined that the vehicle the subject was in was stolen out of the City of Ukiah. The subject, later identified as S-James Norton, was placed under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon (versus a peace officer) and possession of stolen property. During a search following his arrest .45 caliber ammunition was found on his person. Following the determination that S-Norton was prohibited from possessing ammunition, he was charged with being in possession of ammunition.

Prior to leaving the scene, a male subject stopped at the location to report that he had made the original call regarding S-Nortonís aggressive behavior. According to the subject he located the truck parked on the side of the road. Thinking the vehicle had broken down, and planning to provide the person with assistance, he approached the vehicle that S-Norton was in. As he approached the truck S-Norton quickly and aggressively exited the truck while holding a shovel above his head in a threatening manner. S-Norton demanded money, and then drugs, from the subject. Fearing that he was going to be harmed, the subject got back into his vehicle and left the location.

S-Norton was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon (versus a Peace Officer), possession of stolen property, possessing ammunition when prohibited from doing so and attempted armed robbery.

S-Norton was transported to the Mendocino County jail where his bail is currently set at $75,000.00.
