Synopsis: On 04.19.12, at about 3:00 PM, a Mendocino County Sheriff's Deputy was conducting an investigation at the Seashell Inn, 135 Main St., Point Arena, when a resident mentioned that a dog had been abandoned in one of the rooms several days earlier and was possibly deceased. The deputy located the dog, alone in a room, and found it in very poor health and extremely emaciated. There was no food or water for the dog and the room was extremely fouled with excrement.

Mendocino County Sheriff's Office Animal Control officer Werner responded and took custody of the dog. The dog was transported to veterinary care and shelter.

Further investigation led deputies to identify the owner of the dog as Michael Shamhart. On 04.20.12 Michael Shamhart was located in Point Arena and interviewed about the dog.

Shamhart was subsequently arrested for a felony violation of 597(B) PC (Animal Cruelty) and an outstanding arrest warrant for violation of 11550 H&S. Shamhart was lodged at the Mendocino County Jail with bail set at $20,000.00.
