Synopsis: On 03/01/2013 at approximately 2246 hours Mendocino County Sheriff's Deputies arrived at a residence located in the 44000 block of Little Lake Road to conduct a probation search on a subject known to be residing in a trailer at that location.

The subject on probation had to submit to unannounced compliance checks as part of their probation, which included a search of their residence.

Upon arrival, Deputies announced their presence and eventually were met by Nia Smith, who opened the trailer's door after a delayed amount of time.

Smith was the cohabitating partner to the subject on probation.

Smith was informed of the reason for the Deputiesí presence. Smith in turn told Deputies that the subject they sought was not currently at the location.

Deputies had reason to believe the probationer was inside the location and gave Smith repeated directions to exit the trailer. Smith refused and then made an effort to retreat back inside the trailer, ignoring the Deputiesí further directions not to do so.

The Deputies advanced on foot towards Smith fearing she may arm herself with kitchen knifes near her position.

A brief struggle with Smith ensued when attempting to take her into custody and she was ultimately arrested. During the struggle a Sheriff's Deputy sustained a minor injury (abrasion and bruise) to the hand and leg.

The probationer was found inside the trailer and a search showed the probationer was in compliance with the terms/conditions of their probation.

Smith was transported to the Mendocino County Jail and booked on the listed charge and was to be held in lieu of $15,000.00 bail.
