Synopsis: On 03/11/2013 at approximately 2000 hours Deputies from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office were detailed to a residence in the Brooktrails subdivision near Willits, California. Deputies were summoned to the location regarding a fight occurring at the residence.

Deputies arrived on scene and learned Sampson Smith and Van Slagle had forced entry into the victim's residence by kicking in the front door.

Upon entry Sampson Smith physically assaulted the victims with his clinched fists (Orion Strong and Sylvia Smith) while demanding money. It was reported that Strong owed Sampson Smith money due to a previous personal loan.

Deputies learned a bottle of prescription medication had been taken from inside the residence by Slagle during the incident and that he and Sampson Smith both had fled the residence in a vehicle.

The victims sustained non-life threatening injuries as a result of the physical assault and Deputies received suspect and vehicle descriptions.

A be-on-the-look-out (BOLO) was issued to local police agencies requesting they stop the vehicle and suspects.

A short time later officers from the Willits Police Department conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle which had been described by the victims.

Located in the vehicle were Sampson Smith and Slagle as well as the stolen bottle of prescription medication.

Sampson Smith and Slagle were arrested and booked into the Mendocino County Jail on charges of assault, robbery, felonious threats and probation violations.

Both subjects were to be held in lieu of $150,000.00 bail.
