Synopsis: On 04-27-13 at approximately 1215 hours Deputies from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 3000 block of North State Street for a reported gunshot victim.

On arrival Deputies found 34-year-old Kirk Schaefer inside his residence with a gunshot wound to his head. Schaefer was unresponsive, but still alive. Ukiah Valley Fire and ambulance personnel transported Schaefer to an air ambulance, were he was transported to a Santa Rosa area trauma center.

Deputies learned Schaefer had summoned the mother of his child along with a mutual female friend to his residence to give her (the mother) some personal property. When the two females arrived, Schaefer produced a sawed off .22 caliber rifle from a shed on the property and pointed it at the mutual friend.

Schaefer then told the mutual friend to leave, but she tried to reason with Schaefer. Schaefer then shot one round at the female, missing her foot by about two feet. The female then ran away in search of a phone to call 911.

Schaefer then pointed the rifle at the second female (mother of his child) and forced her into his residence. Once inside, Schaefer threatened her with the rifle and asked her a few questions before shooting himself in the head.

Schaefer was prohibited from owning or possessing firearms and there was an active domestic violence restraining order restraining Schaefer from contacting the second female (mother of his child) at the time of this incident.

Deputies later learned Schaefer died from his injuries at the trauma center.
