Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW)
Permit Application Process
This section outlines the policy and procedure by which
the Sheriff of Mendocino County will or will not issue a Carry Concealed
Weapon permit. This section explains the application procedure and the
requirements necessary before a Carry Concealed Weapon permit is considered
for issuance. This policy conforms to the provisions of Penal Code Sections
12050, 12051, 12052, 12053 and 12054 governing Carry Concealed Weapon
permits.
Pre-Application Information:
- An applicant's residence must be within Mendocino County.
- All new applicants (non-previous permit holders) are required
to successfully complete a 16-hour "Citizen's Firearms Course." These
courses are generally available through the local college and gun
club.
- New permits are issued only to applicants who meet the requirements
outlined below.
- The permit, if issued, may contain certain restrictions as to
the time, place, and conditions under which the applicant may carry
a concealed weapon.
- The California Supreme Court (Public Information Act) has ruled
that your name and the purpose for obtaining a Carry Concealed
Weapon permit are a matter of public record and may be released
upon demand.
- Effective January 1, 1999, a Standard Carry Concealed Weapon
permit is valid for two (2) years from the date of issuance.
- Carry Concealed Weapon permit holders must have experience and
knowledge of:
- Firearm safety, personal responsibility, and liability;
- Moral and legal aspects of firearm use;
- Confidence and competence in the care and use of firearms,
and
- California State laws governing Carry Concealed Weapon
permit holders.
Instructions to the New Applicant
- Carefully complete the Department of Justice application by filling
in all the blank spaces, including section 7 (Investigator's
Interview Notes). Please do not sign application until requested.
If your California driver's license has a post office box number,
attach documentation that proves you reside in the County of Mendocino
(i.e. property tax bill, vehicle registration, proof of home or vehicle
insurance, voter registration, etc).
- You may bring your completed application, along with a valid Certificate
of Training consisting of a minimum of 16 hours, to the Sheriff's
Office in the area in which you reside. Your application will be reviewed
for completeness and you will be photographed. You will then be contacted
to set-up an appointment with the area commander for an interview
to determine whether there is sufficient cause to issue a permit before
you complete the fingerprinting portion of the application process.
You will be required to pay the $25 processing fee at this time.
- Your application must be accompanied with the following documents:
- Driver's license
- DD214 discharge form, if you are a veteran.
- Citizen's Firearms Certificate (16 hours) or 832 P.C.
course certificate
- Fingerprinting will be completed only after an appointment with
the area commander is completed, and interview notes are forwarded
to the CCW Coordinator. To complete the fingerprinting portion of
the application process, go to the the Sheriff's Business Office at 589A
Low Gap Road, Ukiah. Fort Bragg residents may go to the Fort Bragg
substation for printing. The $112 fee is to be paid at that time.

is there and the current hours of operation. You can reach the CCW Coordinator at (707)

- Processing of the Carry Concealed Weapon permit will be completed
only after the criminal history background check and Firearm Eligibility
letter is received from Department of Justice. The Department of Justice
portion of the process may take from two to three months, sometimes
longer. Please be patient.
- If you change your address you have ten (10) days to notify the
Sheriff's Office of the change and make arrangements to have your
file and CCW permit updated.

Instructions for Renewal
To renew your Carry Concealed Weapon permit, you must
complete a four (4) hour training course that includes instruction
on firearm safety and the laws regarding the permissible use of a firearm.
Approximately two months prior to your expiration date, a letter notifying
you of the time and date of the refresher class will be sent to you
from the Sheriff's Office.
